Barricades is an online convention dedicated to Victor Hugo’s seminal work, Les Misérables, and its influence. From the book itself to the stage musical and every adaptation in between, Les Misérables has had a powerful and lasting impact on the world. The volunteer-run, online-only convention will take place on 12-14 July 2024.
The con’s programming will consist of both fanwork and academic work, as well as crossovers between the two. Our aim is to highlight fun, engaging, and varied programs that span multiple disciplines and a variety of cultural and critical perspectives.
We encourage submissions from fans and scholars in all fields, including casual, new, and long-term fans alike; fanfic writers, fanartists, creators of other forms of fanwork, both critical and creative; meta-writers, students, postgrads, postdocs, early career researchers, unaffiliated scholars, and established academics/faculty members! In addition to creating a memorable weekend for the fandom, we hope to strengthen the connections between the Les Mis fandom, students, and other scholars working on Les Mis in all fields. We encourage submissions to either the fan track or the academic track based on the type of content proposed, rather than on whether you’re involved in formal academic work. The approach makes the distinction, not the presenters or the topic.
Please note that presenters and panelists will need to register for the con, along with other attendees, see the Registration page. Registration costs £12. Scholarships will be available.
(Note that you must be at least 13 years old to submit programming to Barricades.)
