Translating for Lee’s Miserables: Ideology and Translation in the Confederate Revision of Les Mis
Barricades has had at least one previous panel about the Confederate revision of Wilbour’s Les Mis translation, talking about its general history and context. This would be a quick review of that for folks who missed it before, and then a deeper dive into analyzing the changes and cuts that were actually made to the material, and how they compare to the editor’s stated intentions in the preface. (I’m a French-to-English translator, and this is a reworking of a research paper I did as part of my MA in Translation Studies, but I could easily either keep it more academic-leaning or make it more informal and fannish in tone; either way the content would be basically the same, but with slightly different ratios of translation theory to memes.)
