From Bread Rioter to Communard: French Revolutionary Women
Working class French women’s political consciousness developed earlier than their male counterparts along a continuum of struggle from the ancien régime to the Paris Commune. This presentation highlights the radical political character of the French working woman, focusing especially on women’s roles in the barricade warfare of the 1830s and ’40s. Through complicating the masculine positioning of the act of revolution found in Les Misérables and by extension its fanbase, this presentation aims to inspire fans to consider the ways in which their female characters may also think, act, and dream of revolution.
