Call for Programming for Barricades: A Les Mis Convention – Academic Track
Barricades is an online conference focused on all aspects of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and its various adaptations. We invite fans and scholars to submit proposals for the convention’s academic track, which will form the programming of the con.
Submissions for the fan and academic programming tracks open: February 10, 2026
Submissions close: April 15, 2026

Programming examples
We are interested in submissions that address any aspect of Les Misérables, its adaptations, its context, its authorship, its production, and its reception, including topics such as:
- Analyses of Les Misérables in all its forms from different sociocultural and political perspectives and approaches, such as through feminist, postcolonial, religious, and queer lenses.
- Revolution and resistance movements from the nineteenth century to the present day.
- Nineteenth-century studies, including fashion, literature, politics, and architecture.
- The production, promotion, distribution, and reception of Les Misérables and its adaptations.
- The history of theatre
This is not by any means an exhaustive list; we welcome and encourage submissions that address topics beyond those listed here.
Programming guidelines
Programming may be presented live or pre-recorded and may take the form of:
- Lectures or paper presentations between 20-60 minutes with or without visual accompaniment, and with or without Q&As
- Presentations of creative or critical work.
- Informal or moderated discussions, panels, or round-tables.
- Social-oriented programming such as meetups, affinity groups, “paint and sip”, or crafting events.
- Workshops (e.g., how to research the nineteenth century).
- Interviews.
- Special events.
