SUMMARY:Researching Musical Javerts – ten years of waiting to write one chapter…
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines how the role of Javert in Les Misérables has developed across four decades of global performance. I will be discussing vocal lineage, costume and staging. I will also be drawing on interviews, anecdotes, production histories, and multilingual libretto analysis. This is all to tell you all about (finally!) writing the chapter I needed to, and despite constantly hitting ‘The Great Les Mis Copyright Wall’.\n

SUMMARY:Codes in Context: Queer Possibilites of Enjolras and Grantaire
DESCRIPTION:During the first year of Barricades, I presented a version of this talk based on my PhD thesis (Creative and Critical Writing – Same-Sex Desire and Intimacy in Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables and Its Adaptations), which I believe wasn’t recorded or made available to attendees after the live session. I’d love to revisit this topic now I’ve graduated and am working on a proposal for a non-fiction book based on my research; it’s definitely apparent to me from my position within the fandom that ExR is something lots of people are still just discovering for the first time. With this talk, I would discuss historical and literary contexts of Les Mis, and include close readings of the novel, arguing that Enjolras and Grantaire’s relationship is depicted in ways that are comparable to other characters of the period whom scholars have identified as being coded as queer. I would connect this discussion to ideas about transfiguration and queer futurity, and touch on their relationship in adaptation. I submitted a novella as part of my thesis, which reimagines Enjolras and Grantaire’s relationship in the present day, and I’d love to tie fanwork such as this to my critical work on the novel and its adaptations too.\n

SUMMARY:What Little People Can Do: Exploring Character and Thematic Echoes of Les Miserables in Tolkien’s World
DESCRIPTION:For this project, I will examine several key moments, themes, and characters in Les Miserables and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and expanded world – in novel, stage, and screen adaptations. I want to draw parallels as well as contrasts – in order to highlight the themes they share and the ways in which each work presents its ideas and things it values. \nIn particular, I will draw connections between several key characters as well as character relationships and scenes from each, which will bring out comparisons of shared themes – for example, nature, light and darkness, domestic vs. military concerns, the heights of ideals and beauty vs. depths of depravity, the power of the “common” man vs. the Great Men, friendship and community, temptation, redemption, faith, hope, common welfare, use of language, poetry, music, and storytelling. \nI will focus a lot on comparisons between the characters and story arcs and beats between Jean Valjean, Marius, Cosette, Frodo, and Sam; and their troubled yet merciful relations toward Javert and Gollum, the tragic “anti-villains” spared by the heroes but not by the story. There will also be an exploration of connection between Eowyn and Eponine, along with their relations toward Aragorn and Marius, as well as Grima Wormtongue and Montparnasse. Further character and thematic parallels will be enriched by Tolkien’s commentary in his Letters and unpublished drafts. \nIn the end, I’ll do a lightning round conclusion where I compare and contrast two iterations of connection between the nine members of Les Amis de L’ABC with the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring, mapping characters and their relationships onto each other in two ways with varying priority of connection. All this will hopefully present a fun piece of comparative literature, which with its parallels will highlight and enrich our understanding and appreciation all the wonderful themes we love about these stories.\n

SUMMARY:Evaluating “A Tempest in a Skull” Through the Lens of Modern Theories of Practical Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:We often hold 19th century romantic literature to be completely distinct from modern psychological theory and science. However, Les Misérables has proven time and time again to offer profound insights into a multitude of phenomena ahead of its time through Hugo’s depiction of his observations and experiences. While theories of practical wisdom have been abound since Aristotle, something profound about the chapter A Tempest in a Skull is its perfect reflection of a number of proposed theories of wisdom from the modern age. I evaluate the proceedings of the chapter and some of the surrounding context from the lenses of popular modern theories of wisdom, including Tiberius’ theory of reflective wisdom, Schwartz & Sharpe’s characterization of Aristotle’s practical wisdom, and Baltes & Smith’s Berlin Wisdom Paradigm. \n

SUMMARY:Translating for Lee’s Miserables: Ideology and Translation in the Confederate Revision of Les Mis
DESCRIPTION:Barricades has had at least one previous panel about the Confederate revision of Wilbour’s Les Mis translation, talking about its general history and context. This would be a quick review of that for folks who missed it before, and then a deeper dive into analyzing the changes and cuts that were actually made to the material, and how they compare to the editor’s stated intentions in the preface. (I’m a French-to-English translator, and this is a reworking of a research paper I did as part of my MA in Translation Studies, but I could easily either keep it more academic-leaning or make it more informal and fannish in tone; either way the content would be basically the same, but with slightly different ratios of translation theory to memes.)\n

SUMMARY:Patron Minette and the Spectacle of Criminality in Les Misérables
DESCRIPTION:Within Les Misérables, the Patron-Minette gang offers a highly sensationalised depiction of criminality that differs from many of the novel’s other characters. These villains straddle a unique boundary between being genuinely dangerous and horrifying Gothic monsters, while also provoking laughter from readers when they end up in absurd, momentarily comedic incidents throughout the narrative. This presentation will examine how Hugo constructs the grotesque and carnivalesque identities of the gang’s four principal rogues – Babet, Gueulemer, Claquesous, and Montparnasse – by exploring their exaggerated physicalities, monstrous reputations, and performative actions. It situates their depiction within nineteenth-century cultural contexts marked by the rise of the ‘criminal celebrity’ and a broader societal fascination with mythologising the criminal underclass. The presentation also further considers how various TV, film, and musical adaptations of the text have interpreted Patron-Minette’s inherent spectacle over time.\n

SUMMARY:Les Misérables Only Connect Group 1
DESCRIPTION:A Les Misérables trivia game based on the UK quiz show Only Connect. Congoers will sign up for two teams (3-5 members each) and compete in four timed rounds of play. Questions will involve the Brick, the musical, potentially other adaptations, Victor Hugo’s life and times, and, this being a game about connections, quite possibly other things connected to the book in some way! This panel will have two sessions – sign ups to play will open on Friday 24th July.\n

SUMMARY:Our Charming Conversations Across a Sea: Letters Between A Publisher and His Author
DESCRIPTION:The correspondence of Victor Hugo and his publisher Lacroix is filled with insights into the process and problems encountered in publishing Les Miserables – political problems, procedural problems, and interpersonal problems. This dramatization of their letters tells the story of two men, separated by the English Channel and who had never worked together before, and how they published a 10 volume book in two months.\n

SUMMARY:Give Me Skeleton Wells or Give Me Death
DESCRIPTION:Hugo’s description of the Battle of Waterloo paints a vivid if not entirely factual picture of the events that led to Napoleon’s defeat in 1815. But what really happened at Waterloo? And is there any actual evidence for some of Hugo’s wilder battlefield tales? Let’s find out!\n

SUMMARY:The Combeferre Problem
DESCRIPTION:His name has at least five different possible etymologies. He has over twenty canonical hobbies and interests in his introduction. He believes in the role of science in progress and neither affirms nor denies anything. He silences Marius in two words and sings about it. He’s a pacifist by nature but brings three guns to the barricade. He knows the specifications of a cannon but underestimates the speed of light. He implores the barricadiers to think of their families while forgetting his own mother. His values and philosophy are echoed by the narrative from start to finish, but his name is only mentioned in 28 out of 365 chapters. His vision of social progress through education and his focus on the fates of women and children make him one of the novel’s most politically serious characters, but he’s severely underexamined in academic and fan meta alike. So—what is going on with Combeferre? \nIn this panel, I present an analysis of Combeferre’s character through canon-era sciences, education, and social issues. We will examine how Combeferre’s narrative context helps us read Les Misérables as a whole, compile a canon-accurate reading list for the Combeferre in your life, and make sense of what the superiority of Jesus Christ over Napoleon is even about.\n

SUMMARY:The How and Why of Barricades: A Military Study
DESCRIPTION:The street barricade is the iconic symbol of 19th Century revolution, but its purposes are easy to misunderstand. By looking at its use in the uprisings of 1830, 1832, and 1848, we can see the military realities behind how barricades work, when they don’t — and why the Amis had already lost before the first soldier reached the Rue de la Chanvrerie.\n
